A dating site for widowers
Somewhere around the sixth month the casseroles stop arriving. The phone gets quieter. And then at somebody's wedding a man you barely know puts a hand on your shoulder and says you will meet somebody, you are still young, she would want you to be happy.
Nobody says that to a widow at six months. They say it to you, and then a fair number of the same people raise an eyebrow if you actually do it.
So this page is not going to tell you when. Brighter is a dating site for widows and widowers, it costs nothing to join or to look, and the whole point of it is that the question of timing is yours rather than the room's.
Yes, widowers do repartner sooner
It is worth knowing the actual size of it, because the gap is real and it gets used against men who have done nothing wrong. A study in the Journals of Gerontology, following people aged 45 and over, found that ten years after being widowed roughly 29% of widowers had formed a new union, against roughly 7% of widows (Repartnering After Widowhood, Journals of Gerontology: Series B). The same work found that most repartnering after widowhood happens within ten years or does not happen at all.
The interesting part is the explanation. The researchers put much of the gap down to the marriage market rather than to men grieving less: there simply are not many widowed men about. In England and Wales the last census counted 730,000 widowed men against 2.2 million widowed women (Office for National Statistics, Census 2021).
Which means two things at once. Your pace is statistically ordinary rather than suspicious. And you are going to get more attention than you were expecting, some of it from people who are not who they say they are.
The attention nobody warns you about
Widowed men are targeted by romance fraud, and they tend to assume they are not, which is precisely what makes it work. The pattern is worth learning once: interest that arrives fast and runs hot, a profile that happens to mirror your own loss back at you, a reason video never quite works, then a crisis, then a small request.
The best defence is dull and effective. Keep it on the site. Never send money to somebody you have not met in person. Treat intensity as a reason to slow down rather than as a compliment, however good it feels after a couple of quiet years. Our guide to the way romance scams are run on widowed people lays out the whole sequence.
What is different about being here
Brighter is built for people in some version of the same position, which changes the first conversation more than you would think. You do not have to decide whether to mention it in the first message or the fifth. You do not have to watch somebody work out what expression to use. You can say her name.
You also will not be asked to account for your timing. That question gets asked of widowers more than of anyone, usually by people who mean well, and it is not asked here.
What stays private
Practically, that means a few things worth knowing. Photo verification applies to every profile, which is the single measure that stops most of it. Messaging stays private. There is a moderation team, and reporting somebody is not a fuss. Your own details stay yours: a display name rather than your real one, your date of birth unseen, every photograph under your control, and the option to hide the profile entirely on the days you would rather not be findable.
What it costs
There is no charge to set up an account, look through it, or be matched with anyone. A paid membership exists and adds a few extra features, but nobody needs it to meet somebody, and we would rather be dull about that than clever. The detail sits on the page about what the free account actually includes.
If you are not ready, that is fine too
Nothing here needs deciding tonight. Reading for a few months and then joining is a reasonable outcome of an evening on a website, and so is reading and deciding against it.
If you are trying to work out where you actually are with it, our guide to dating again after losing your wife goes through the signs without telling you what they should be. There is also the main page about who Brighter is for, which covers the site as a whole.
Questions people ask
Yes, and Brighter is built for it. Everything is written for people who have lost a husband or wife, so the fact of it does not have to be introduced or explained. Joining, browsing and matching cost nothing, and you can read the whole site before deciding anything.
There is no interval that is correct, and no interval that is disrespectful. Some men are ready inside a year and some are not ready after ten. The people with the firmest opinions about your timing are rarely the people who have been through it themselves.
Widowers do form new relationships at a higher rate. A study in the Journals of Gerontology found that ten years after being widowed, about 29% of widowers had formed a new union against about 7% of widows. Researchers attribute much of that gap to how few widowed men there are.
Use them carefully. Men are targeted by romance fraud too, and often assume they are not. Keep conversations on the site, never send money to somebody you have not met in person, and treat sudden intense interest as a reason to slow down rather than a compliment.
In your own time
Whenever that turns out to be. There is no version of this where somebody here tells you it has been long enough, and no version where somebody tells you it has not.
